Home of the Panthers

"One of the most infamous plays of the 2004 Panther season began during this photo, taken from the stands. The official has thrown the flag in the direction of Matt Willig. Look closely and you can tell by the way the weighted flag is flying which direction it is coming from. Seconds later, Willig would pick it up and disgustedly chuck it, earning the Panthers a very dumb penalty in their close loss to Denver on Oct.10, 2004."

The Panthers had some difficult times over the years – and so did some of the writers who covered them. I’ve been criticized many times on talk radio and in the "letters to the editor," but this picture represents the first and so far the only time I had fans protesting me through banners.

The background: I had written some articles critical of Kerry Collins. Collins and I would later return to having a good working relationship (I went to New York and sat down with him for a long one-on-one story several years later). But at this time, Kerry thought I was being too harsh with him and that I sometimes quoted him out of context. He went on sports radio to criticize me, other people got inflamed and these banners were part of what resulted. Thanks to The Observer’s Patrick Schneider for snapping this picture (which never ran in the paper).

P.S. I love the way that one guy spelled "credibility."
